Practice History

History of Havelock Grange Practice

Havelock Grange Practice is the product of a merge between Havelock Practice, Victoria Road, Health Centre & Grange House Surgery, 22 Grange Road.

The Havelock Practice was started in the late 19th Century by Dr Mitchell and Dr Ainsley. Over the years the practice gradually grew in size. New partners including Dr Conley, Dr Lowry, Dr McKenzie, Dr Rait and Dr Ayre joined the Practice and developed it further. In 1985 Dr Ayre led the Practice as it moved from its original site at Havelock House on Victoria Road across the road to the new purpose Health Centre.

Over time the Practice parted company with Dr’s Mitchell, Ainsley, Conley, Lowry and McKenzie all whom retired from the Partnership.

Dr Richard Moody joined the Practice in 1985, followed by Dr Boleslaw Posmyk in 1986. In 1993 Dr Simon Acey joined the Practice when Dr David Rait moved back to Aberdeen.

The Practice Doctors remained stable for several years until in 2007 when Dr Don Obih was appointed as full time Partner. Dr Ayre in the same year reduced his working commitment to 2days a week. A couple of years later in 2009 Dr Ayre retired.

Grange House Surgery was home to Dr Strain from the middle of the 1920’s. The lovely old house was used as a surgery and over time, changes were made not only the premises, new Doctors to the practice were Dr Alison Eaton joining in 1990 followed by Dr Patrick Mc Gowan in 1991. The Partnership then consisted of Dr Anne Holmes, Dr Alison Eaton, Dr Patrick McGowan. Dr Rachel Roberts joined the Practice in August 1999, having trained at the Practice on the Cleveland Vocational Training Scheme. The Practice continued as a four partner partnership until Dr Holmes left in August 2004. To replace Dr Holmes, the practice recruited Dr Iyad Al-Mashharawi as a Salaried GP, but who then later joined the Partnership in September 2007.

The changes in the practice following the new GP contract and developments such as the Quality and Outcomes Framework have been enormous. When we discovered that we had the opportunity to be part of a move to new premises being developed in the centre of town. It seemed sense to consider joining with another Practice that was also moving to help us to provide an improved service for patients. As a result Havelock Practice and Grange House Surgery partnerships embarked upon a merge and as of the 1st April 2009 is called Havelock Grange Practice.

The new partnership continued to function from 22 Grange Road, Victoria Health Centre & Brierton Medical Centre during which time a new development was being built in the centre of town. During this time Havelock Grange Practice employed a Salaried GP, Dr Komalta Jaiswal, who in April 2010 joined the partnership at Havelock Grange Practice.

A new chapter in the Havelock Grange Practice saw moves to the long awaited new premises in Park Road. A move from 22 Grange Road on 7th May was soon followed by the move from the Health Centre on 10th May to the One Life Hartlepool in Park Road, where it was business as usual from 10th May 2010.

During our short time at One Life we have also experienced changes within the GP Partnership. Dr Don Obih left the practice in January 2011, returning to his previous home of Stevenage, followed shortly by Dr Jaiswal departure to pasture new down under.

The Practice encountered recruiting difficulties but was pleased to appoint Dr Jacqueline McKenzie to replace Dr Obih, Dr McKenzie took up post with the Practice in August 2011.

Dr Richard Moody retired from the Practice in 2016.  Also in 2016 the Practice lost Dr Al-Mashharawi and Dr Hameed whom left the Practice for ventures new.

We welcomed Dr Din in 2017 and Dr Reeve in 2018 who are both Partners in the Practice, maintaining the Havelock Grange Practice partnership as eight in total.

In March 2020 Dr Posmyk will retire from the Practice.
